Shantou University now has one National Key Discipline (Pathology and Pathophysiology) and four Guangdong Provincial Key Disciplines (Pathology and Pathologic Physiology, Fundamental Mathematics, Immunology and Pharmacology). It offers 2 post-doctoral programs (Preclinical Medicine and Pharmacy), 7 second-level Ph.D. degree programs, 2 first-level master’s degree programs, 47 second-level master’s degree programs, and 4 professional master’s degree programs, thereby establishing a comprehensive educational system, covering undergraduate, masters and doctoral studies.

Shantou University has developed a wide range of research platforms in terms of fundamental research, engineering technology, humanities and social sciences, as well as commercialization of research achievements. We now have one Ministry of Education National Key Laboratory (The Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Technology Laboratory), one STU Division of National Key Laboratory of Molecular Oncology and three Provincial Key Laboratories (Marine Biology Laboratory of Guangdong Province, Image-Processing Technology Key Laboratory of Guangdong Province and Medical Molecular Imaging Key Laboratory of Guangdong Province). Furthermore, we have two key laboratories for Guangdong Higher Education (Wind Tunnel Laboratory and Key Laboratory of Immunopathology), one Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences of Guangdong (Local Government Development Research Institute). Additionally, there is one Innovative Research Platform for Key Industries in Guangdong (Shantou Research Institute for Light Industry Equipment), three Guangdong Demonstration Bases for Cooperation of Industry, Education and Research in Higher Education (Shantou Research Institute for Light Industry Equipment, Wind-former Control System Site, Ecological Aquiculture and Aquatic Product Processing Site). In addition, we also have one Research Center of Engineering Technology for Higher Education in Guangdong (Subtropical Shellfish and Seaweed Aquiculture Technology Research Center.)

In recent years, the research fund of STU has increased 35% annually on average. In 2009, the total funding amounted to RMB 42 million. With the increasing support of the funding, the research programs have gained more importance and higher quality; meanwhile the number and the proportion of National Projects in STU have also witnessed significant rise. In 2008, the National Science Foundation funded one project for Outstanding Youth. In 2009, three projects received funding from National Natural Science Foundation of China, and one project was funded under the “National 973 Program”. Since 2004, four faculty members have been honored to participate in the New Century Elites Funding Projects hosted by the Ministry of Education.

Shantou University places great emphasis on basic research, which has resulted in the steady upgrading of its academic achievements and influences. Since the last few years, Shantou University has maintained its ranking at around No.70 in terms of the number of SCI-indexed papers published in the name of STU. In 2008, the average impact factor of the SCI-indexed papers published by the faculty rose from 1.65 to 2.31. The number of papers published in journals with >5 impact factors increased from 2 to 17. According to the “2008 Ranking for Nature & Science Publications of Higher Education Institutions (First Author),” STU ranks No. 8 among all universities in China, and No. 1 among all Guangdong universities.

STU is making great efforts to promote the economic growth of the local community, by establishing public research and service platforms. Shantou Research Institute for Light Industry Equipment under Shantou University is the first Innovative Research Platform for Key Industry in Guangdong, and among the first group of Guangdong Demonstration Base for Cooperation of Industry, Education and Research in Higher Education. The Niutianyang Aquatic Product Research Center, which has been jointly established by STU and the local government, as the key platform for industrial innovation in Guangdong, helps to solve the major technical problems existing in the economic and social development of East Guangdong. As for the transfer (licensed) of intellectual property rights, six patents were transferred (licensed) in 2009, with the contracted amount of RMB 1,658,000. Additionally, in 2009, STU was one among the four groups of institutions in China to carry out the intellectual property rights pilot program. This is another great IPR-related achievement scored by STU since 2007, when the University was designated as one of the first groups of intellectual property rights pilot institutions in the Guangdong Province.
