On November 12th, 2017, the 3rd South China Shantou Inter-Varsity Debate Tournament (3rd South China Shantou IV) ended with great success. Nearly 100 students and teachers from top high schools, including Shantou Jinshan High School and Shantou No.1 High School, were invited to observe the competition.
After competing against 80 debaters from 16 universities such as Shantou University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Sun Yat-sen University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in the three-day intense training and tournament from the 10th to 12th, Team SYSU won the championship. Chen Junfeng from STU Business School was awarded the prize of Best Speaker. Three teams from STU broke into the Semi Final.
This event was jointly host by the English Language Center, STU and the English Debate Society, STU. In order to ensure the quality and transparency of the event, we invited Sandeep Kamal Chulani－ Invited Adjudicator of the 4th Asian World Schools Debate Championships, Assistant Chief Adjudicator of the 3rd Shanghai International Debate Open and Grand Champion of the 37th Hong Kong Inter-varsity Debate Contest－as our Chief Trainer and Adjudicator along with his team of trainers. Among Mr. Chulani’s many accomplishments are the following: Champion of the 19th South China Regional Cup, Best Speaker of the Shanghai International Debate Open, Champion of the China Debate Academy, Quarterfinalist of the Macau Asian Parliamentary Debate Open, Champion of the Hong Kong Inter-varsity Debate Competition, and many other national and international debate tournaments.
Over the past four years, the SIV, with its determination of providing training and evaluation of high quality, has invited several world-class debaters to serve as trainers and adjudicators. These renowned debaters include the following: Loke Wing Fatt, President of the Singapore Association of Inter-Varsity Debating; Zheng Bo, invited adjudicator of the World University Debating Championship; Chanel Chan, invited adjudicator of the Australasian Intervarsity Debating Championships; Samuel Chan, ESL Champion of the World University Debating Championship; and Won Chian Lim, Grand-finalist of the Northeast Asia Debate Open and Deputy Chief Adjudicator of 17th FLTRP National Finals.
