On December 6th, the 20th National Telemedicine Education Conference was held in lecture hall of Shantou University. The principle of Medical College, Prof. Bian Jun, deputy secretary, Chen Maohuai, and the counselor, Prof. Luo Minjie attended this conference.

The topic of this conference is medical education. Professor Eliezer Shalev, from Israel Institute of Technology Rappaport Medical College, and Professor Joseph C. Kolars, from University of Michigan Medical College, both made brilliant academic speeches on the conference.

Professor Shalev made a speech named Training an ideal doctor in an institute of science and technology. In his speech, Prof. Shalev analyzed the difficulties that people are confronted with in medical education, and he pointed out that people need to create a reasonable mode which is specially for doctor training. The five main pillars of this mode should be composed of clinical skill, scientific research innovation, professional leadership, medical professional accomplishment and science and technology capability.

The name of Prof. Kolars’s speech was Training professional doctors is the new way of American medical education. Prof. Kolars thought that it is more important for students to learn that how to raise questions and get answers. Besides, a new course system should be set up as soon as possible to provide appropriate practice for the students training, which is to help them improve themselves. In spite of the course system, a series of evaluation tools should be created to judge students’ performance.

On the conference, the professors and the audience had a heated discussion about the topics. What’s more, the conference was on live broadcast on the Internet, and  China Education Television rebroadcast the conference on its network television. Through the interaction on the Internet, professors answered the questions that some audience asked on the website.

The National Telemedicine Education Conference is held once every year, and it has always been sponsored by Li Ka-Shing Foundation. Every year, different international medical experts are invited to take part in the conference to give speeches, and they will have discussions on certain topics with some Chinese medical experts. In conclusion, this conference has made great contribution to improving the medical education in China.
