In order to raise students’ awareness of water safety, and so reduce the water accidents in summer, the Shantou CAPD committee, and the Water Rescue Community from Shantou University together offered a water safety course in Anbu(庵埠) primary school in the morning of May 19th. Most water accidents result from students’ lacking first-aid skills and therefore offering the water safety course would help guarantee the security of students in their swimming in summer. Anbu primary school paid high attention on this activity. Zheng Yubin(郑育斌), the headmaster of Anbu Primary School, hosted the opening and about 500 teachers and students participated in this course.
The STU students enrolling in water rescue course combined power point slideshow and some specific scene simulation to lecture on the water safety, and motivated students with award-winning questions during the lecture. They also taught students how to call for help, save themselves in case of emergency. By listening to this lecture, students learned much about water safety.
During the course, the lecturers analyzed a few examples of drowning accidents and clearly summarized the right ways to survive or to give help. Moreover, they displayed some professional rescue equipment and taught the students how to use them. The lecturers divided the students into three groups, and by means of scene simulation, they respectively elaborated how to do the warm-up exercise properly before a swim, what to do when having muscle cramp in a swim and how to practice cardiac resuscitation in the first time. The primary school students played an active part in those simulation. Moreover, the exquisite gifts also arouse their enthusiasm.
This activity has drawn the media attention and was reported by the local TV station. It was also one of the philanthropic activities of STU, which echoes the present theme of Guangdong education, “Mutual Service, Innovation and Development”.
