On May 18, Chen Liangxian, Secretary of Shantou Municipal Party Committee, chaired a thematic working meeting to study how to support the reform and development of Shantou university, and to speed up the construction of Guangdong Israel Institute of Technology (MIT). Executive Vice Mayor Zhang Yingjie, Vice Mayor Zhao Gong, Secretary of the Jinping district Party committee Wu Qihuang, and the heads of the relevant functional departments including Shantou Development and Reform Commission, Science and Technology Department, Education Department, Financial Sector, Urban Planning, Land and Resources Commission attended the meeting.

Executive President Gu Peihua and Vice Principal Lin Ming introduced the progress of Shantou University’s development and the construction of Guangdong Israel Institute of Technology at the meeting. They also discussed how to solve the difficulties that these two schools are facing with other participants properly. Chen Liangxian studied all the questions and identified appropriate solutions, making the related functional department to be responsible for the problems .

On the conference, Chen Liangxian expressed sincere gratitudes to Mr Li and Li Ka Shing Foundation. He said, “Because our hometown has Mr Li Ka-shing, so that there are Shantou University and Guangdong Israel Institute of Technology. These two schools are not only the beautiful business card of Shantou, but also the strong basis to support education and the innovation of science and technology in Shantou area. Chen Liangxian especially emphasized: "No matter how poor we are, we will never make a poor education; even though we could not support other places any more, we will always support Shantou University and Guangdong Israel Institute of Technology". It should be their indispensable duty for all the government departments to attach great importance and go all out to support the construction and development of the two schools. For the surrounding environment and facilities of these two schools, we should increase the intensity of law enforcement and we need to complete the planning work earnestly, so that we could establish a harmonious and excellent environment which is suited to the college atmosphere. Every departments of Shantou city, especially Jinping district, should be initiative to cooperate with these two schools and to develop corresponding industries, so that the platform for innovation and talents gathering could be really formed.
