STU students won the National First Prize of CUMCM-2017

 

The contest results of China Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) 2017 was announced on November 4th. In this contest, STU students won two National first prize, one National second prize, four first prize, nine second prize and nine third prize in Guangdong Division. The two teams comprising of Ruicheng Xie, Chuxin Liu, Yumei Pan, Changming Wang, Zilu Zhang and Qianming Guan, all from the Department of Mathematics, won the National First Prize in this competition. In addition, the team that was composed of Pei Song, Shaomin Han and Minru Lu won the National Second Prize.

 

CUMCM-2017 was held from September 14th to 17th. Under the guidance of three teachers Caimin Wei, Jian Li and Rui Fang, the Department of Mathematics organized 24 teams to participate in this contest. More than 110,000 college students from 1,418 universities of the entire nation, including Hong Kong, Macau SAR and Tai wan, Singapore and Australia, comprised of 36,375 teams, participated in this competition. While, the proportion of the First Prize awarded to the team was 1%.

 

CUMCM is an annual contest for undergraduates all over the world, organized by CSIAM (China Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics). In the contest, up to three students advised by at most one teacher (optional) form a team. The team's task is to develop in three days mathematical and/or computer models to solve a simplified real-word problem in engineering, management, etc. The role of the contest is to improve students' understanding of mathematics, especially mathematical modeling and mathematical software, and to enhance students' motivation for studying mathematics and to cultivate students' creativity and overall ability.
