The founding of the Department of biomedical engineering of STU

 

On the morning of April 23, Shantou University Department of Biomedical Engineering was inaugurated and the first biomedical engineering Innovation Forum was held in Hall C of the multifunction hall of gymnasium. Experts and scholars from domestic and foreign biomedical engineering field gathered together to witness Shantou University open a new chapter in biomedical engineering teaching. The ceremony was presided over by Lin Peng, vice dean of the engineering college.

 

Professor Wu Lan Haas, vice principal, said at the ceremony that the school has excellent conditions and abundant social resources. In particular, the Li Jiacheng Foundation actively supports the development of biomedical engineering in Shantou University. The University of Michigan, an international leading university, was introduced as a partner to provide the advanced curriculum system and high quality teachers for Shantou university, which played an active role in promoting the establishment and development of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Wu Lan Haas hopes that the Department of Biomedical Engineering will absorb high-quality talents and experience, explore diversification and individualized talent training model, cultivate biomedical engineering talents with the ability to innovate, start up business and integrate across the border, and become an influential and special one according with future development trend.

 

Shantou University Council Special adviser, former Vice Minister of Education, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Professor Wei Yu attended the unveiling ceremony. In his speech, Wei Yu made suggestions on the construction and development of the Department of Biomedical Engineering from a professional perspective. At the same time, from the point of view of "old friends" of Shan tou University, Wei Yu earnestly hopes that Shan tou University can seize the new opportunity when the government vigorously develop Internet information technology, and not only plan from the long-term development and innovative development perspective to  build the major well but also create a distinctive way in future’s development.

 

In his speech , Professor Lonnie Shea , a representative of the University of Michigan , said that the new development of biomedical engineering will face challenges in its construction and development , and the University of Michigan will give its full support to the new development’s teaching, scientific research and the cultivation of outstanding talents  .

 

Professor Fang Qiang, director of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, said that in teaching, the Department of Biomedical Engineering will adhere to the elite educational pattern of Shantou University, combine with the transformation of new engineering subjects, pay attention to practical experience and focus on cultivating students' ability of observing and analyzing ,critical and innovative thinking, engineering design and implementation and the ability to express and communicate. In the field of scientific research will form a cooperative relationship with universities, hospitals and industry at home and abroad for the initial purpose of adapting to the needs of local industries. There is also the ambition to lead the development of industry in the future.

 

Biomedical engineering is a combination of science and medicine, and integrates the theory and methods of engineering, biology and medicine. It studies the state and changes of the human body at different levels, and uses engineering techniques to regulate such changes. The purpose is to provide solutions for medical problems and to prevent and diagnose diseases. It provides services for treatment and rehabilitation so as to safeguard human health.

 

The Department of Biomedical Engineering in Shantou University aims at cultivating high-quality talents who can combine engineering knowledge and methods with life sciences, and train students to get the specialized knowledge of biomedical engineering, and at the same time have the ability to innovate and autonomously learn with international vision, which will lay a solid foundation for future development as an outstanding leader in the field of medical devices and health industry.

 

This major is the only biomedical engineering major in China that teaches in all English. It introduces a complete curriculum system of biomedical engineering major from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), which ranks among the top 10 in the world. It introduces high-quality teachers at home and abroad, including full-time teachers at the University of Michigan, and to adhere to the "solid foundation, solid specialty, flexible direction, distinctive characteristics and strengthened practical training" in the curriculum. The curriculum system includes five modules: basic course of mathematics and science, basic course of engineering, basic course of specialty, course of medicine and engineering, course of designing sequence, giving students new learning style. The student not only has the opportunity to receive the special scholarship offered by the Li Jiacheng Foundation, but also have the opportunity offered by the Li Jiacheng Foundation to do exchange studies and internships with famous overseas universities. Graduates will be given the opportunity to study for masters and doctorates at prestigious overseas schools. It is reported that the major will start from this year to recruit students nationwide.

 

In the afternoon, the first Medical Innovation Forum was held in the library lecture hall. The forum was presided by Professor Fang Qiang, dean of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Special adviser to the Board of Governors of Shantou University, former Vice Minister of Education, Professor Wei Yu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, expert in Metallurgical Automation and Information Engineering, Professor Liu Jie, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Nigel Lovell, University of New South Wales, Metin Akay, University of Houston and Lonnie Shea, University of Michigan had thesis speeches. Professor Jiang Hong, secretary of the party committee and president of the university, attended the forum and gave a welcoming speech.

 

Representatives of teachers and students from Jinshan Middle School, Chenghai Middle School, Luhuai Middle School, Liudu Middle School and Chaoyang Experimental Middle School were specially invited to listen to the lecture, so as to make more middle school students understand the development trend of modern biomedical engineering. After the lecture, the middle school students asked the professors questions they were interested in. Many middle school students are very interested in the intellectual development and mental health topics given by Professor Wei Yu, and actively interact with "Grandma Wei." Grandma Wei "hopes that students will not be under too much pressure from their studies. You must have enough sleep. To a certain extent, the holding of this forum has enlarged the popularity of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and plays an active role in promoting the enrollment of the major.
