About the film

In 1993, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) was taken to court. The once largest natural gas and electric company in the US was accused of releasing hexavalent chromium pollution in Hinkley, California, causing a high rate of cancer in the town.

Erin Brockovich, a single mother who did not even complete high school, exposed the case and helped local residents win a $333 million compensation through a lawsuit.

This was the highest compensation in a single pollution-related cancer case in the US, and a milestone in recent American tort compensation.

About the film

The story ofMona Lisa Smiletakes place in the 1950s at Wellesley Women’s College.

After World War II, men returning from the battlefield needed jobs and the country encouraged women to return to their homes as“good wives and mothers,” which was reflected in the education offered at Wellesley Women’s College.

Katherine Watson, the film’s protagonist, graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, a school full of free-thinking reformist ideas, and went to Wellesley Women’s College to teach on her own.

How will the progressive-thinking Katherine fare in this traditional-minded school? We will find out in the upcoming event of“Era of Women in Film” at Esther Hall.
